When you feel the urge to binge or overeat:
Sit down away from the food.
Breathe slowly for two minutes.
Then, engage in a loving dialogue with yourself.
The urge to binge or to continue eating will abate. This is because you are being loving with yourself, you are not being harsh or berating. You are open to meeting yourself at this place of acceptance. Speak to yourself as you would speak to a child you love, “Sweetheart, what’s going on?” In doing this, you’ll receive information about your feelings, your needs. From there, you can ask yourself if you need to communicate these feelings and needs to anyone in your life, be it your partner, supervisor, co-worker, or family member. This practice alleviates stress, which alleviates emotional eating, which enables you to be more present to your life.
