My secret wish, okay, my not so secret wish for all is that you release your fear. Fear constricts us, disables our dreams, and gives rise to the critical voice, the one we try so hard to keep at bay, usually with less than stellar coping; over eating, over drinking, over working, over sleeping, to name a few ways we commonly check out. Anxiety is the culprit we think, but when we look a little closer, we see that it is fear that drives the anxiety, anxiety is the symptom of closing our hearts.
Want to live a more open-hearted life? Try this very simple practice. Whenever you begin to feel anxious, take a breath and say, “Open Heart.” When you notice the first signs of anxiety, irritability, or envy, also notice how your heart feels as it’s constricting, usually your shoulders droop and cram together, your whole being constricts. Pull your shoulders open, open your heart and say, the words, “Open Heart.” You can even do a little hand motion to represent the opening of your heart.
Notice the shift in energy. It is immediate, which is why this is a simple and beneficial practice. It truly shifts a negative energy to one that is hopeful, open to possibilities, open to love, open to connection.
This shift in energy takes only seconds, the important part is in noticing when you begin to constrict in fear. Open your heart in this beautiful new year, you’ll be surprised at the results and the ability to move forward. Fear keeps us stuck, open-heartedness moves us toward others and our authentic self.
